Lake Land College dental hygiene clinic offers affordable oral healthcare
June 30, 2014
The Lake Land College dental hygiene clinic offers affordable dental care to the public while also providing students a state-of-the-art-education. The clinic is now taking appointments for this summer.
The lab, located on campus in Mattoon, in Northwest Building, room 116, offers patients dental exam, cleanings, x-rays and fluoride treatments at $10 for students and $15 for adults. There are plenty of appointments available.
"The students do an excellent job and get to work on their clinical hours,” said Deborah Kirts-Thomason, program director. “More than that, patients get cost effective oral healthcare.”
Kirts-Thomason said the service takes longer than traditional exams, so patients are asked to reserve four hours for each appointment. However, patients are receiving affordable dental care in exchange for their time. Kirts-Thomason said the lab sees many patients who have no dental insurance. In addition, because of the large work area in the lab, the clinic can work on large families at once. Kirts-Thomason also acknowledged that many patients just like to give back to the local community college.
"We are preparing the hygienists of the future and we would like to give them a variety of experiences. We ask that the community help by providing them with those experiences," Kirts-Thomason said.
Also, Kirts-Thomason highly recommends people remember to take care of their oral health.
"Oral health can impact your overall health, so it is very important to keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy," she said.
Clinic hours are from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Thursdays. Later hours include 4 - 8 p.m. on Tuesdays. Hours may vary by semester.
