Local children participate in Monsters Inc. Workshop, Tree Campus-USA project at Lake Land College

April 30, 2014

The Future Educators of America (FEA) at Lake Land College recently hosted the Monsters Inc. University Workshop. Children from pre-school to sixth grade practiced their best screams while participating in a wide variety of activities including scavenger hunts, scare games and bracelet making.

The children also engaged in planting trees behind the pond on Lake Land College’s campus. This service learning project was a part of the Tree Campus-USA program and supported Frankie Kasdorf, Effingham, in becoming an Eagle Scout.

Kasdorf and Lake Land College humanities instructor Tom Caldwell assisted the children in planting trees while teaching them about the important role trees play in the environment. The children were given the opportunity to work together to shovel soil and gather water in order to successfully plant the trees. Caldwell explained to the children that the roots from the trees they planted will help save the surrounding soil from washing away every time it rains.

“It’s refreshing to see such great enthusiasm from the kids as they get their hands dirty and interact with nature,” said Caldwell. “I’d like to keep creating opportunities for them here at the college.”

The Tree Campus-USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and helps colleges and universities across the country create and sustain a healthy community and transform their campuses into ones that have a positive impact on the environment. Tree Campus-USA encourages students to help make their colleges cleaner and greener by planting trees.

Altogether, 23 trees were planted to help improve Lake Land College’s environment and assist with Kasdorf’s Eagle Scout project.

Cutline:  Participant Jackson Ulm contributed to the tree planting by shoveling soil to cover up the tree’s roots at the Monsters Inc. University Workshop hosted by the Future Educators of America at Lake Land College.
