Lake Land College hosts Adult Week, honoring adult students

April 7, 2014

Lake Land College will be celebrating adult students during the “014 Adults: It’s Your Week” celebration, beginning April 21. The week includes a series of events honoring current students and several activities in the community.

This year will also be the first year for BYOF- Bring Your Own Friend to Campus, in which current students are encouraged to bring a guest to campus to learn more about the college.

The week-long events consist of:

•    LLC at the Mattoon YMCA on Monday, April 24, 9 – 11 a.m.;
•    LLC at Joe’s Pizza in Altamont on Tuesday, April 22, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.;
•    Breakfast for current LLC Adult Students on Wednesday, April 23 on campus from
7:30 – 9 a.m. in Webb Hall, room 081 and at the Kluthe Center from 8 – 9:30 a.m. in the conference room;
•    BYOF – Bring Your Own Friend to LLC on campus on Wednesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 24. This event will also take place at the Kluthe Center on Thursday, April 24;
•    LLC at Shelbyville Dairy Queen on Friday, April 25, 9 – 11 a.m.

The college will also name the Non-Traditional Student of the Year and honor all nominees during the campus breakfast.

“We know the path to enrolling in college can be overwhelming for non-traditional students. We hope these community events will provide a low-key environment in which people feel comfortable visiting with Lake Land College representatives,”  Lisa Shumard-Shelton, director of new student admissions, said.

New adult students who register for summer or fall Lake Land College classes during one of these events may qualify for a tuition-free class. New adult students are defined as those who have not attended Lake Land College during the past three years or did not recently graduate from high school and immediately attend college. The tuition waiver is good for one college credit class up to three hours and is for in-district residents. Students must pay their own fees.

Registration is required for the BYOF event to accommodate guests as well as qualify students for the prize drawing and guests for eligible for the one tuition -free class. To register, students should first check with their instructors to determine which classes are participating. Then, they must complete a registration form.

If you don’t have a friend that is a current student, but are interested in learning more about Lake Land, email Shumard-Shelton at to set up a visit on April 23 or 24.

On the day of the event, all guests and hosts must check in. This will take about 15 minutes so friends are encouraged to plan accordingly. Guests will be asked to complete an Intent to Enroll form to be considered for the Tuition Waver. The form can be downloaded from the Admissions/Get Started link from the college’s home page:
