Lake Land College to host 2014 National TRiO Day

February 3, 2014
Students and staff members from TRiO programs throughout central Illinois will attend the event to promote and recognize the role of the Federal Education Department’s TRiO Programs in the lives of Americans who are working to improve their situation by attaining a college degree.
During the event, guest speakers from area colleges and universities will address the audience. Guest speakers include: Salisa Olmstead, Humanities and Communication Division chair, Lake Land College; Erika Weaver, adjunct faculty member for the Social Science Division, Lake Land College; T.M. Linda Scholz, assistant professor, Department of Communication Studies, Eastern Illinois University; and Angela Jacobs, Department of Communication Studies, Eastern Illinois University.
This event is open to any TRiO staff members and students enrolled in any TRiO program throughout central Illinois.
Lake Land College offers two TRiO programs – TRiO Student Support Services and TRiO Destination College. TRiO Student Support Services is a program with the sole purpose of helping students in need succeed at Lake Land College. The program, along with its counselors and advisors work with each student individually, providing and connecting students with a wide variety of support services, events and activities. It provides one-on-one meetings with staff, informative workshops and access to educational, social and cultural opportunities available only to TRiO participants. TRiO Destination College identifies and assists individuals in grades 6-12 who meet eligibility criteria and have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their post-secondary education.
Nearly 160 Lake Land College students participate in TRiO Student Support Services and applications are currently being accepted to the program. So far for the 2013-2014 school year, TRiO Support Services students have enjoyed a variety of support services and cultural activities including visiting Eastern Illinois University and attending the Doudna Fine Arts Center’s presentation of Luis Valdez’s “I Don’t Have to Show You No Stinking Badges!,” a visit to Illinois State University and the ISU School of Theatre and Dance’s presentation of Brian Friel’s “Dancing at Lughnasa,” and visits to the University of Illinois Springfield and Lincoln’s Library.
TRiO Programs are Federal outreach and student services programs provided through the US Department of Education, designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. Lake Land College provides two TRiO Programs to the students within the college district.
