Lake Land College to host 46th annual Commencement Ceremony on May 17
Lake Land College will host the 46th annual Commencement Ceremony this Friday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Land College Field House.
Nearly 350 students will participate in the ceremony and more than 2,000 students will graduate after completing the fall and spring semesters.
During the ceremony, student trustee for the 2012-2013 school year, Ashley Oberling, Plainfield, will address the student body. During her year of service to the college, Oberling represented the students of Lake Land on the local, state, and national level while remaining active in college and community activities. Following her high school graduation from Payson Seymour High School, Ashley enrolled in the agriculture transfer program at Lake Land College. She was elected to the Student Government Association, served on the Presidential Search Committee and Building and Sites Committee and served as a member of the Lake Land College Cheerleading Team for two years. Oberling was honored earlier this year when she received the Lake Land College Agriculture Division Student of the Year Award. Oberling will graduate with an associate in science degree in agriculture and will transfer to the University of Missouri, where she will study agribusiness.
Likewise, keynote speaker for this year’s ceremony is Tom Wright, Dieterich. Wright is a successful business and community leader in the Dieterich area. Following his graduation from Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois University, Wright returned to his hometown to work in the family furniture store. During his 16 years as president, Wrights Furniture has become an icon for quality furniture throughout central Illinois. His success in business is equaled by his involvement in community efforts, both locally and regionally. Wright serves on the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors and received the 2009 Lake Land College Alumnus Achievement Award and is a member of the inaugural Class of 2007 Lake Land College Distinguished Alumni Society. He was recognized twice in 2012 with the East Central Illinois Development Corporation Outstanding Leadership in Community and Economic Development Award and the Richard C. Siemer Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation. Wright received an associate degree in science from Lake Land College in 1973 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. He and his wife Linda, a 1975 graduate of the college, have two sons who both attended Lake Land College and EIU.
