Lake Land College postsecondary ag students place high at national conference

Members of the Lake Land College Postsecondary Agriculture Student Organization (PAS) recently attended the Postsecondary Agriculture Student Organization National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.

This year, over 700 students from agriculture colleges and universities from 16 states were in attendance. Participants from Lake Land qualified to attend by placing first or second in their respective areas in state competitions earlier this year. 

“Our team did an outstanding job,” said Dyke Barkley, horticulture instructor and PAS advisor. “And we couldn’t be more pleased to have one of our own Lake Land students representing the organization on a national level.” 

The following is a breakdown of the results from the team and individual competitions.

Crops Specialist – LLC placed first as a team and team members include: Aaron Niebrugge, Sigel, who also placed second individually; Cole Ohnesorge, Altamont, who also placed third individually; and Tim Petty, Beecher City, who placed 14th individually.

Livestock Specialist-Swine – LLC placed first as a team and team members include: Dan Ammann, Highland, who also placed second individually; Brennen Diessen, Highland, who also placed fourth individually; and Tonya Fender, Lynchburg, Ohio, who also placed sixth individually.

Livestock Specialist-Overall – LLC placed third as a team and team members include: Evan Smith, Rensselaer, Ind., who also placed sixth individually; Alicia Wendte, Teutopolis, who also placed seventh individually; and Celia Karweik, Hopkins, Mich, who placed 12th individually.

Horticulture Specialist – LLC placed third as a team and team members include: Travis McKerrow, Mattoon, who placed fourth individually and Nichole Estes, Mattoon, who placed sixth individually.

Equine Specialist – Kim Dohm, Newton placed fourth individually. 

Employment Interview – For Agribusiness, Amanda Barr, Altamont, placed first and in Ag Equipment Service, Justin Thomas, Charleston placed fifth.

Speakers in Ag -Impromptu: April Gibbson, Columbia City, Ind. placed 14th individually.

Membership to PAS is open to any agriculture student attending Lake Land College. The objectives of this organization are:

To provide opportunities for individual growth, leadership and career preparation among the students of agriculture.

To provide an opportunity for developing leadership abilities through participation in the employment experience programs, course work, and organization activities for Lake Land College agriculture students.

To provide an opportunity for Lake Land College agriculture students to participate in state and national PAS Organization leadership events and activities.

To promote better student-faculty and student-student relationships.

To promote a higher scholastic standard among the students of agriculture.
