Congressman Johnson speaks to Lake Land College political science students
Rep. Tim Johnson, R-Ill., recently visited Lake Land College to speak to students in an American National Government, a political science class instructed by Shane Rogers.
During his visit, Johnson spoke with students about a variety of topics including farm policy, social security, the national budget, genetically modified foodstuffs and pollution, to name a few. Johnson also discussed his role in the state and national government in addition to his upcoming retirement.
“One of the realities about this job as a politician and leader is realizing and understanding the everyday problems people deal with in their lives and working to make the lives of our citizens better,” said Johnson. Those things that don’t make the deadlines are still a sure reality of this kind of job and it’s important to recognize that.”
American National Government teaches students the principles of American government. Topics include federalism, civil liberties, citizenship, political parties, elections and the American constitutional system.
"This was a great learning opportunity for my students,” said Rogers. “It gave them a chance to ask questions about issues that are important to them and get direct feedback from their elected representative. I appreciate the Congressman taking the time to schedule a visit."
