Basic Nurse Assisting Program (NDP.NA)

The Basic Nursing Assistant Program trains the student to become an entry-level care giver.  Instruction of basic nursing skills is provided in the classroom, nursing laboratory and the clinical setting.  The course also includes medical terminology, communications skills, safety, infection control and patient/resident rights.  As an entry level care provider, the student will learn to observe patient/resident conditions, report changes to the nursing staff, perform basic nursing skills and assist patients/residents with activities of daily living under the supervision of a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

The Basic Nursing Assistant Program is a one semester. 8 credit-hour certificate program approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

The Health Care Worker Background Check Act requires all students in a Nursing Assistant Training Program to submit to a fingerprint-based background check before working directly with patients or residents.

Students must successfully complete the Basic Nursing Assistant Program (AHE-040) with an 80% or better to be eligible to take the IDPH Competency Evaluation Examination.  Upon passing the state competency examination, the student's name will be added to the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry and will be eligible to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Program requirements may change over time. Specific degree/graduation requirements are determined by the student's degree audit.
