Frequently Asked Questions

What is TRIO Student Support Services?

TRiO Student Support Services is a federal grant program funded through the U.S. Department of Education. The program is designed to provide an integrated support network to students who meet the eligibility criteria. LLC was first awarded the TRiO grant in 2005.

Why should I become a TRiO SSS participant?

TRiO provides a personal college "safety net" from freshman year through graduation. The program can help you build your strengths and address your areas of concern. By becoming a participant, you will gain access to services and opportunities not available to other students on campus.

Can everyone participate?

There are certain eligibility requirements TRiO students must meet. Students who are eligible for TRiO must be pursuing an associate degree or certificate and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  1. Be a first-generation college student, which means neither parent or legal guardian graduated from a four-year institution; or

  2. Meet certain income requirements, like being eligible for a Pell grant; or

  3. Be a student who is eligible for Student Accommodations at Lake Land College

What can this program do for me?

Personal Counseling

You will receive personal support and encouragement through individual counseling. To help you succeed academically, TRiO conducts tailored assessment and advising.  TRiO will assess your needs, develop an individualized educational plan and refer you to appropriate services.

Academic Assistance

TRiO collaborates with academic counselors and other college staff to help TRiO students select classes and identify appropriate resources to help you stay on track to meet your goals. Students will receive individualized assistance in creating a manageable course schedule and completing the registration process. Once in your classes, TRiO offers individual and small group tutoring in partnership with the Tutoring Center. Finally, TRiO’s dedicated Learning Skills Specialist can help you develop your learning and studying skills to their fullest potential!

Social and Cultural Enrichment Opportunities

Develop an appreciation for diversity and personal and social development through cultural events and opportunities on and off campus. These cultural events include trips to plays, musicals and other TRiO sponsored events, at no cost to the participating TRiO student.

Career Development

Get advice on decision making skills, career research, writing skills and other job search tasks.

TRiO students attend workshops and round table discussions designed to provide friendly, personalized assistance on a variety of academic and personal topics. TRiO covers everything from identifying your learning style to building a workable personal budget. Other popular topics include test taking skills, completing FAFSA forms, healthy eating and managing stress.

Transfer Opportunities

Your TRiO counselor can help you learn the admissions and financial aid procedures of attending a four-year institution. Also, many of our events throughout the year involve trips to other universities in the area. Many TRiO participants find these trips to play a critical role in their transfer decision-making process.

I would like to meet more students like me. How can SSS help?

TRiO Student Support Services offers many opportunities for students to become acquainted with each other. We encourage experienced TRiO students to reach out to those who have just started and help them meet others with similar majors, interests or challenges. You’ll get a chance to meet other TRiO students at workshops, cultural events and college tours. TRiO encourages students to attend college-wide events, too. There is no shortage of ways to meet others.
