GADSDEN, Ala. - At different times of the previous night and then morning, Lake Land’s softball team had a pitcher, leadoff batter, No. 2 batter and starting third baseman get sick.
That left Kayla Kirkpatrick as the only available pitcher with two games to be played Sunday.
“It wasn’t too much because we’ve been working since November,” Kirkpatrick said. “It was just time to step up and get some wins for my team.”
The sophomore from Bethalto Civic Memorial did that pitching a three-hitter in a 5-1 win and then another complete game allowing four unearned runs in a 13-4 win for the Lakers’ non-conference doubleheader sweep at Gadsden State.
“The girls did pretty well,” Lake Land coach Nic Nelson said. “We were able to get by with the girls being sick. We kept checking the infirmary back at the hotel.”
Skyler Woods led the offense going 3-for-4 in the first game and 3-for-3 in the second.
“I wasn’t thinking about it,” Woods said. “The less I think about it the better I do. A lot of people got their chance to prove themselves since we had two or three starters out.”
Rebecca Patterson went 2-for-3 in the first game when not feeling well and then after starting the second game was sent back to the hotel leaving Lake Land with nine players to complete the sweep that raised its record to 8-2.
“I was a little bit tired but knowing there was no one else to put in,” Kirkpatrick said. “I feel my pitching was all right today but there’s always room for improvement.”
Nelson said he was hoping Patterson and Cherise Boyd, who has been out with an injury, can help with the pitching load today when the Lakers are to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Chattanooga State making up for a Saturday postponement because of weather.
