Coaches Dessie and Tammy Boeser have been busy coming up with routines in their heads and on paper. Now the challenge is to bring that routine to life! Being a college cheerleader comes with it a lot of challenges, such as keeping grades and homework up, while juggling a job and games and practices! Starting off the year with 20 cheerleaders and they are down to 16 is nothing new to this veteran Cheerleading Coach. There are so many things that these college students face these days, that you always take more than you know you will end up with. Not to mention the other extra things that the cheerleaders are involved in such as hosting the Cardinals Caravan in January and hosting the popular Cheer Camp for Kids in February! The team had an average GPA of 3.2, which included the full time student, coach, 911 dispatcher and single mother, Coach Dessie. "I couldn't be prouder of these kids" says Coach Tammy. "I'm always telling them that I'm so glad they are on the 'good-kid' list". It takes more than just being an athlete to be a cheerleader, you must also have trust. Most cheerleaders cheer with the same group of people for several years, but in college, you just meet these other people and they become your bases and back spots! You have to learn how to trust them in a very short amount of time. "We have a fantastic tumbling coach who has taken non-tumbling college cheerleaders and has them tumbling!" Coach Tammy adds "It takes great people to make a great team!" So next time you are at a Lake Land basketball game and you see that girl standing on one leg in the air, just remember the trust she has in her bases and teammates. Also when you see those tumblers go across the gym floor, you might want to note that the Field House Gym Floor is one of the hardest to floor to tumble on for some reason. Any former Laker Cheerleader will tell you that. Hope to see you at a Laker Basketball game because we have the best players, coaches, and cheerleaders!
