ST. GEORGE, Utah – Lake Land has received the No. 11 seed and is to play No. 6 Iowa Western at 5:30 p.m. Central time Wednesday in the NJCAA Division I national softball tournament.
The seed for the 49-5 Lakers was a bit lower than Nic Nelson was expecting but the coach was not discouraged.
“I was thinking maybe 7 to 10,” Nelson said. “We’re not like the NCAA where you know all the teams and you go across the country playing everyone. In our situation it’s different when you know each other. You have to beat them all anyway so it doesn’t matter if you’re 1 or 16.”
The 16-team double-elimination junior college tournament is to run Wednesday through Saturday at St. George Utah.
WLKL 89.9 FM is to broadcast the games that are also to be streamlined at 899themax.com. Lake Land’s Chet Novak is to provide the play-by-play description.
Nelson was also glad to hear that two of his former Lakers – Newton’s Kimberlin Wallace of Valparaiso and Neoga’s Olivia Mintun at Stony Brook – are in the NCAA Division I tournament.
While UT Martin with former Lake Land player Katie Reiff lost to Jacksonville State in Sunday’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship game, Jacksonville State coaches attended a Lake Land practice last week expressing interest in Kristi Belshe, Skyler Woods and Melanie Steer.
