Instructions for Installing Drivers on Windows 98SE

Computers running Windows 2000 and XP operating systems will automatically recognize the flash drive when plugged into the computer. Computers running Windows 98SE must have drivers installed for a flash drive to work with the computer. To install the drivers, follow the instructions below:

Please note: Windows 95, Windows ME, Windows 98 (first edition) do not support USB drive capabilities.

Workaround solution 1: Go to the Flash drive manufacturer's website and download the Windows 98 driver from the site. Below are some common manufacturers of flash drives.

How to Install the Driver

  1. Download the driver from the flash drive manufacturer's website and save it to the computer desktop.
  2. Double-click on file with the .exe extension to run the installation of the drivers.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions. Once the software drivers are installed, the computer should be able to recognize the flash drive.
  4. Indication of the Computer recognizing the flash drive

Workaround solution 2: If you cannot install the drivers on your home computer, you can save your homework files to a floppy disk. When on campus, come to the Center for Technology and Professional Development (in the library) or the Library Resource Desk and transfer the files from your floppy disk to your flash drive. You will then have access to your files on campus computers.
