Internet Explorer 6 Browser Settings
Cache Settings
When Internet Explorer downloads a website a copy of the site is stored in what is called the Temporary Internet Files. Only a certain amount of space is allotted for this task. Once the Temporary Internet Files is full, download time will increase making the browser sluggish. The Temporary Internet Files can be emptied in Internet Explorer by completed the following steps.
- On the menu bar go to Tools > Internet Options.
- The Internet Options dialog box will display. Select the General tab.
- Under Temporary Internet files, click the Delete Files button. This will clear the folder that holds the Temporary Internet files.
- Click the Clear History button. This will clear out the History of visited websites.
Check Settings
- In the Internet Options dialog box on the General Tab, click on the Settings.
- Make sure the radio button next to Automatically is checked.
- Click OK.
Java Settings
Java is required technology to access your Blackboard course. Below are the steps to enable Java in the Internet Explorer. It is important that only one version of Java is installed on your computer. If you are not sure, complete the browser tune-up at the following location, http://www.webct.com/tuneup .
- Go to Tools > Internet Options.
- In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab
- Click the Custom Level...
- In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll down to Java Permissions.
- Make sure the radio button next to Disable Java is not selected.
- Click OK.
JavaScript Settings
JavaScript is required technology to access your Blackboard course. Below are the steps to enable JavaScript in the Internet Explorer.
- Go to Tools > Internet Options.
- In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab
- Click the Custom Level...
- In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll down to Active scripting.
- Select the radio button next to Enable is selected.
- Click OK.
Cookie Settings
Cookies are text files downloaded to a visitor's computer hard drive to store visitor's actions in order to better customized their following visits to the same website. Cookies must be enabled to use Blackboard. Below are the steps to complete this task in Internet Explorer.
- Go to Tools > Internet Options.
- In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Privacy tab
- Click the Advanced...
- In the Advanced Privacy Settings dialog box, place a checkmark in the box next to Override automatic cookie handling.
- Under First-Party Cookies, select the radio button next to Accept.
Clearing All Cookies
- Go to Tools > Internet Options.
- In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Privacy tab
- Click the Edit...
- In the Per Site Privacy actions dialog box, click Remove All.
- Click OK.
Popup Blocker Settings
It is important to configure pop-up windows to accept pop-up windows from the Blackboard server. Below are the steps to complete this task in Internet Explorer.
- Open a new Internet Explorer window and go to Tools > Internet Options.
- Click on Privacy tab at the top of the Internet Options dialog box.
- At bottom of Privacy tab, click the checkmark box next to Block Pop-ups and then click Settings.
- In the Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog box, click in the box under Address of Web site to allow: and type the following web address: http://blackboard.lakeland.cc.il.us .
- Click Add and then click Close to close the Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog box.
- Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
Password Settings
There may be times when you need to clear out a saved password after you have had your IRIS (same as for Email and Blackboard) reset. This will allow you to use the new password. Below are the steps to complete this task in Internet Explorer.
- Click Tools > Internet Options.
- Click the Content tab and click the AutoComplete button.
- The AutoComplete Settings dialog box will appear. Click Clear Passwords.
- Click OK.
