LLC rehires the school’s first men’s basketball coach (April 10, 1989): After spending 16 years coaching basketball away from Lake Land—11 years at SIU-Edwardsville and 5 years at the University of Cincinnati as an assistant—Dudley returned to replace Wayne Lockett as the school’s 8th men’s basketball coach. During his earlier tenure as LLC’s coach (1968-70), Dudley enjoyed what is considered the school’s best ever sports season: an impressive 20-1 record in the team’s first year. Hired and endorsed by athletic director Gene Creek and President Robert K. Luther, Dudley was confident a winning tradition could be regained at the school by using the extensive recruiting connections he’d made at Cincinnati, as well as his relationship with Lou Henson, Illinois’s head basketball coach.
