(July 1, 1965): At a regular meeting of the Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education (EIASE)—an organization formed four years earlier and comprised of 33 local school districts’ superintendents examining ways to provide special needs services to students and teachers—the idea of a junior college was first discussed. There was considerable interest shown at this meeting, as there was at the following three meetings of the EIASE. Eventually, the group decided to formally investigate the possibility of bringing a junior college to the area, so on September 23, 1965, the members established The Junior College Steering Committee, which completed the first tasks that the state required in order to bring a school to the area.
