Parent-student convocation occurs at Mattoon’s National Guard Armory (September 3, 1967): Lake Land’s first official college event was an opportunity for Virgil H. Judge, college president, to unveil the athletic teams’ name, the “Lakers,” as well as the school’s colors, scarlet and black. Other issues of perhaps more important presented to the crowd of more than 500 people included an upcoming bond referendum and the diverse make-up of the board of trustees.
