Consolidated Communication’s 1st Special Olympics Family Festival (SOFF) held on College grounds (September 15, 1984): According to Sarah Greider from Consolidated Communications, more than 225 Special Olympians would join 750 volunteers at the first annual SOFF, a day that would become a tradition for both the company and Lake Land. SOFF was the realization of the Lumpkin family’s dream: Combining the efforts of its company with those of the local community towards a worthwhile goal. The first event was a success and continues to be so, Gredier notes, as it has been deemed the “largest event of its kind” by Jim Santos, an affiliate of Special Olympics International.
