New Fitness Center opens (January 18, 2008): The Fitness Center’s grand opening, a ceremony sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA), added 10,000 square feet to the Field House. Its unveiling was the culmination of work the SGA began in Fall 2005, when the organization surveyed students regarding their interest in funding a modern and user-friendly fitness facility by increasing student fees. The overwhelming support for such an addition to the campus—871 of the 1,224 students (71%) endorsed the modest increase of $1.50 to pay for the Center—lead to presentations to administrators and board members, who assisted SGA members as they shaped the look, feel, and size of the workout area. Ultimately, the Fitness Center was an important addition for more than just its “fully-equipped aerobics and dance room, areas for stretching, free weight room, and state-of-the-art fitness equipment”: It was LLC’s first building to use geothermal technology to heat and cool it, an environmentally-friendly approach that would become the blueprint for future building and renovation projects.
