Referendum passes (December 15, 1979): A special election called by the Board of Trustees resulted in a 15.5 cent tax rate that went into the school’s general educational fund. The election came after a recommendation was made by a Board-appointed task force made up of faculty, administrators, students, and staff. The college was facing a financial crisis, a major concern that had been earlier outlined by a North Central Association report, which stated that “current and projected incomes of the college” were “endangered unless additional income is uncovered.” The referendum passed with 4,339 “yes” votes and only 1,255 “no” votes.
