The day is Sunday, March 23 in the year 1969.

Ground-breaking for First Phase of the Campus Master Plan (March 23, 1969): The event’s principal address was delivered by Representative Paul Stone (D—Sullivan) and the ceremony marked formally marked the beginning of construction on four campus buildings: the NW and NE classrooms, the library, and the power house. The total cost of the phase one operation was 4 million dollars, more than half of which was paid for by the State of Illinois. The event commemorated an end to the use of 15 different buildings to teach classes, house the library, and conduct administrative business created difficulties for faculty, staff, and administrators. Classes, for example, were seldom in the same facility, and everyone agreed a real lack of community was lost by not having one central campus.
