LLC’s Dual Credit lets high schoolers jump start college career

August 4, 2014

More than 1500 high school students throughout the Lake Land College district got a taste of college without ever leaving their high school classrooms during the 2013-2014 school year with the college’s Dual Credit Program.

The Lake Land College Dual Credit Program offers eligible high school juniors and seniors the chance to enroll in college-level courses while earning both high school and college credit, tuition free.

“For many students, experiencing a Dual Credit course in high school is their life line to considering pursuing a college education,” said Josh Bullock, president of the college. “They realize they can succeed in higher education and recognize completing a degree or certificate is not out of reach.”

To open the upcoming school year, recently the college hosted its sixth annual Dual Credit Kickoff, inviting instructors and administrators from area high schools to learn about updated dual credit rules and regulations in addition to discussing program coordination and implementation.

According to Bullock, participating in Dual Credit courses in high school can save students and their parents $1400.

“Last year 9,500 college credits were earned by Dual Credit students within our district,” said Bullock. “This translates into not only starting college early, which expedites a student’s college career and entrance into the workforce, but it also adds up to a savings of about $1400 of college credits if the student participates in Dual Credit both junior and senior year of high school.”

For Lake Land College’s Dual Credit Program, courses are taught by a high school teacher, who is qualified to instruct college-level classes, during the regular high school day at the high school’s facilities. To enroll in dual credit courses, students must be juniors or seniors and initially have a high school grade point average equivalent of a C to enroll.  Once a student has taken at least one dual credit course, he/she must maintain an LLC grade point average of 2.0 to continue enrollment. Students must meet all prerequisites and requirements as any other student taking classes on the Lake Land College campus would.

More than 30 high schools participate in the Dual Credit Program through Lake Land College including: Altamont, Arthur-Lovington, Beecher City, Brownstown, Casey-Westfield, Charleston, Cowden-Herrick, Cumberland, Dieterich, Effingham, First Baptist Christian Academy, Kansas, Marshall, Martinsville, Mattoon, Neoga, Oakland, Okaw Valley, Pana, Paris, Pathways, Ramsey, Shelbyville, Shiloh, St. Anthony, St. Elmo, Stewardson-Strasburg, Sullivan, Teutopolis and Windsor.

According to Brent Todd, director of dual credit at Lake Land, the college maintains some of the most rigorous standards in the state in order to ensure that any college-level class offered through the program meets the requirements and standards of an on-campus college course.

“We work really hard to guarantee that the instruction and curriculum of all dual credit classes offered through Lake Land are of the exact same caliber as any class instructed by Lake Land faculty,” said Todd. “This is a very cost effective way for high school students to jump start their college career.”

In addition to Todd, the dual credit staff at Lake Land includes Kris Reider, dual credit specialist.
