Lake Land College Livestock Judging Team completes winning season
May 16, 2014
The Lake Land College Livestock Judging Team recently competed its 2013-2014 season with a winning record and one Laker, Marie Lock, Avon, was named an All-American.
As an agriculture transfer major, who grew up on a grain and cattle operation, Lock was very familiar with handling livestock when she came to Lake Land College as a freshman.
“I’ve shown cattle all over the country, which got me interested in livestock judging,” explained Lock. “So having the opportunity to come to Lake Land and participate on the judging team was the right fit for me.”
The All American Team program, put on by the North American Junior College Association, is designed to recognize students who have made a personal commitment to livestock judging and who have also excelled in academics, college and industry activities, and community service. Fifteen young people are chosen to receive this honor every year. Lock was chosen as part of this prestigious group based on her GPA of 3.55 and her performance at the American Royal, the North American International Livestock Exposition, the National Western and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Upon graduation from Lake Land in May, Lock will attend Iowa State University where she will major in agriculture business.
“This year’s team was in the top five at every contest except for one,” said Coach Ryan Orrick. “They were the high team overall at Western Illinois University, the National Barrow Show and the Dixie National. At most events, there are about 25 teams competing, so I am very proud of their accomplishments.”
The graduating sophomore team competed in 11 competitions during their tenure at Lake Land. As freshman, they competed at two competitions, one at Western Illinois University and another at the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Conference in Lubbock, Texas. As sophomores, the team participated at the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn., the Flint Hills Classic in Manhattan, Kan., the Stockman in Auburn, Ind., the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo., the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., the National Western in Denver, Colo., the Dixie National in Jackson, Miss., the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo in San Antonio, Texas; and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, Texas.
