Lake Land College GIS student receives scholarship from City of Shelbyville

April 17, 2014

Lake Land College and the Shelbyville Economic Development Team have partnered in order to enhance economic development efforts while at the same time providing real-world experience for Lake Land students.

During this spring semester, geospatial technology student, Keera Ray, Sullivan, was sponsored with a scholarship from the City of Shelbyville in exchange for work relating to GIS mapping and data collection. According to Ray, her work with the Shelbyville Economic Development Team stems from the organization’s want to attract industry to the area.

“I made a map of Shelby County and added data to include real estate information, land parcels and utilities,” explained Ray. “It’s been a great opportunity to have this kind of work as a student still earning my certificate.”

According to David Young, coordinator for the Shelbyville Economic Development Team, the organization sought this partnership with Lake Land because they think it’s a great way to invest in economic development in the area and young people.

“Working with Keera has allowed us to have knowledge and information ahead of time so that when industry and organizations approach us about developing in Shelby County, we’re ready to let them know what this area can offer them,” said Young. “This has been an excellent undertaking.”
