Lake Land College welcomes area principals, deans and counselors to campus
April 2, 2014
Nearly 40 area high school representatives from 26 area high schools recently visited Lake Land College for the annual Principals, Deans and Counselors Meeting.
For this year’s meeting, the theme was “The Early Bird Gets the Worm” and according to Lisa Shumard-Shelton, the annual visit to campus gives the principals, deans and counselors a more in-depth look at the college.
“We host this event each year to not only say thank you to all of the people in the high schools that we work so closely with all year long, but it gives them a chance to not only learn about new educational offerings at Lake Land, but to experience them,” said Shelton.
This year, participants experienced a lineup of hands-on activities hosted by the Lake Land faculty and staff. For instance, guests met with early childhood and elementary education instructors and learned more about transfer options to four-year schools. They also explored the world of computer integrated manufacturing and 3D printing and learned about early bird course options for high school students, which allows students to jump start their college education. Finally, a new program at the college, Math Boot Camp was discussed, which assists students in preparing for college-level mathematics courses.
“This year, we really tried to offer activities that would give the principals, deans and counselors more resources to better guide and advise their high school students,” said Shelton. “They learned a lot about transferability, career projections, and academic programs. We tried to focus on giving these professionals the tools they need to help their students.”
Additionally, participants at the annual meeting were entered into a drawing for a three-credit-hour tuition waiver. The winners of the drawing were as follows: Renee Frost, Stewardson-Strasburg counselor; Wendy Griesemer, Shelbyville counselor; Tedra Nelk, Oakland counselor; Heather Strom, Pana counselor; and Mark Thomas, Paris counselor.
