Lake Land College net admin students attend Cyber Security Day at SIUC

March 6, 2014

A group of Lake Land College network administration students recently attended Cyber Security Day, hosted by the School of Information Systems and Applied Technology at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale (SIUC).

More than one hundred area high school and junior college students attended the event to learn about cyber security and dozens more SIUC and Lake Land College students competed in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.

The Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition offered students a chance to participate in a mock cyber security attack, where they worked together to defend from cyber attacks, while creating a secure network for a business.

“Participating in the cyber defense challenge was a valuable experience,” said Heather Wilkey of Charleston. “It taught me that to work in this field, you not only have to understand the ins-and-outs of cyber security, but you have to problem solve and research the ever-changing world of network administration in order to respond to events like this instantly.”

According to Lake Land student Seth Kline, Neoga, attending the Cyber Security Day allowed him to practice what he knows and has learned as a student, but also helped him better understand the real world of working in the network administration field.

“Participating in the event gave me an idea of what a day as a network administrator or cyber security specialist might be like,” said Kline. “It let me practice what I’ve learned in a hands-on setting, but more importantly have me a taste of this profession to see if it’s something I really want to pursue as a career.”

Students who participated in the event include: Heather Wilkey, Charleston; Garrett Grohler, Sullivan; Seth Kline, Neoga; Nick Wernsing, Neoga; Matt Pruemer, Effingham; Eric Spiker, Montrose; William Seeley, Charleston; Brad Clark, Paris; Aaron Mood, Paris; Kris Taylor, Sullivan; Christian Towle, Sullivan; Sarah Ray, Shumway; Corey Humes, Mattoon; and Brandon Schubert, Charleston. The team is advised by Scott Rhine, information technology instructor and coordinator of the network administration program, and Bill Warfel, systems programmer and network administrator.

Lake Land College’s Business Division offers six different information technology concentrations in either associate degree or certificate programs – computer applications, computer game development, digital media, network administration, computer programming and web technology.

The network administration degree and certificate programs provide an intensive course of study that prepares students to work in a business environment while maintaining or administering a microcomputer network. The core required classes cover general areas in information technology and the concentration classes cover both the physical network and operating system environment in great detail.
