Lake Land College Business Division established new scholarship, assisting in student retention

March 4, 2014

Garrison Vezina, Newman, wasn’t sure he would be able to continue his education at Lake Land College. Finances were tight for the computer programming major, and after recently losing his job, the thought of putting together enough money to continue to pursue his degree was of real concern for him.

But, that is when his faculty advisor, Angie Davison, information technology instructor and coordinator of the computer programming major, reached out to him with the opportunity of a newly established Business Division Foundation Scholarship.

“During the November division meeting, the Business Division brainstormed ideas for increasing student retention,” explained Davison. “Faculty members suggested a scholarship to pay accounting blocks of $100 or less for struggling business students.”

So in December, Vezina was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $87, which lifted his account block, allowing him to register for spring semester classes.

“Because of the block I had on my student account, I couldn’t register for spring classes,” explained Vezina. “So being awarded with this scholarship not only allowed me to register for spring classes, but it helped ease some of my stress and worry associated with financing my education.”

According to Davison, the Business Division faculty established this scholarship to help students like Vezina complete their education.

“While the scholarship amounts aren’t huge, we know that every little bit of financial assistance can help a college student,” said Davison. “It’s very worth it from the faculty perspective to foster an educational environment where we can support our students and their success. This is just one way the Business Division is doing that.”

While this is the first award made on behalf of the Business Division Foundation Scholarship, the faculty and staff of the division plan to continue this effort so that future awards can be made through the Lake Land Foundation during the spring and fall semesters.
