Lake Land College technology students attend FabTech 2013

 January 13, 2014

Students in the Mechanical Electrical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Computer Aided Drafting, Pre-Engineering and Welding Technology programs at Lake Land College recently attended FabTech 2013 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

At the event, students explored some of the latest technologies in metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing. FabTech is the largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event in North America. More than 40,000 people attended the event and more than 1500 exhibitors displayed and demonstrated their products.

“Attending events like this is very important for our students because it not only keeps them up-to-date on the latest technologies in the field, but if also offers them a chance to make industry contacts relevant to their field of study,” said John Gentry, power plant mechanic instructor and coordinator for Lake Land.

Lake Land students also benefited from the FabTech educational conference held simultaneously with the four-day expo that included an unprecedented number of expert-led sessions on some of the hottest topics in manufacturing.

“As a student studying welding and metalworking, this was a great event to attend,” said Rachel Finley of Shelbyville. “It gave me a look into the welding and fabrication industry outside of the classroom and helped me learn more about the latest technologies. It was an amazing experience.”

While at the event, Tweco, a provider of MIG arc welding accessories donated protective helmets and welding hoods to the Lake Land program.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for welders are expected to grow 15 percent from 2010-2020, which is higher than average compared to other industries. On average, welders make $17 an hour and Illinois ranks among the top five states in the country with the highest employment opportunities for welders.
