Effingham County Manufacturing Day exceeds expectations

More than 150 students from area high schools attended the inaugural Effingham County Manufacturing Day, sponsored by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce, Lake Land College, the City of Effingham and the Effingham County Economic Development Foundation. High schools in attendance included Altamont, Beecher City, Dieterich, Effingham, Newton, St. Anthony, Stewardson-Strasburg and Teutopolis.

The event offered students an opportunity to tour local manufacturers throughout Effingham County in order to experience the work environment first-hand and to learn about career opportunities and the skills and educational requirements needed for employment in the manufacturing industry.

The 10 participating companies included Hitachi Metals Automotive Components, Hodgson Mill, John Boos & Co., Kingery Printing, Nova Solutions, Quad Graphics, Siemer Milling Company, Southeastern Container Inc., Stevens Industries and Versatech.

The City of Effingham and the Effingham County Economic Development Foundation also invited the students to attend the Effingham County Chamber’s first Friday Luncheon, where they were addressed by Lake Land College President Josh Bullock and Technology Division Chair Tim VanDyke.

“It is critical for our young people to be ready to enter the workforce with the skills and qualifications necessary to sustain long-term and viable employment, especially within east central Illinois,” said Bullock. “Not only are we seeing a resurgence of American manufacturing but we’re seeing that those in the manufacturing field earn nearly 19 percent higher wages than those in other industries.”

According to VanDyke, young people entering the manufacturing workforce will require a highly technical skillset which includes knowledge in electronics, robotics, welding, machining and innovation.

“The manufacturing landscape is changing quickly and we can help you gain the necessary skills to enter a career that comes with a sustainable wage,” said VanDyke.

Manufacturing Day is an annual national event, executed at the local level, which supports manufacturers across the nation that host open houses designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology and careers. Locations of events across the country can be found at
