Lake Land College Foundation kicks off annual fund drive for student scholarships

The Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors celebrated raising nearly $400,000 and awarding nearly $1.2 million in total gifts to Lake Land College students for the 2012-2013 academic year at its annual meeting held recently. The addition of last year’s funding puts the foundations total assets at $7.8 million.

At the meeting, board members kicked-off the yearly fund drive. In its 43rd year, the Lake Land College Foundation set an annual fund drive goal of $247,500 and a $137,500 endowment goal.

During the past year, the foundation’s assets grew from $6.3 million to $7.8 million, according to the audit presented at the meeting.

“More than 24,000 students were enrolled at Lake Land College last year with 38 percent of all area high school graduates attending the college, said Bob Pancoast, president of the Lake Land College Foundation. “That is a lot of lives being improved through education in east-central Illinois and more opportunities for all of us to grow and prosper.

During the past school year, the Foundation received more than 1,220 scholarship applications but had funds available to award less than 420 scholarships, or one-third of the students who applied for funding. With an ever-increasing enrollment at the college, many students were turned away. As enrollment continues to climb, the foundation strives to bridge that gap.

“We all know that there is a tremendous need for scholarship assistance” said Pancoast. “Last year, we were able to award a scholarship to one student for every three applications we received. This is a great accomplishment but let’s not forget about those 67 percent of students who filled out that application asking for help that we were not able to award funds to.”

Dave Cox, director of the alumni and foundation, added that donating to the Lake Land College Foundation is a way to make an important investment in the communities throughout east central Illinois and help someone who wants to better their life and the life of their family.

Pancoast said the foundation has been honored to be the recipient of so many generous gifts from area residents, but that more work can be done to improve the lives of students.

“Lake Land College diligently focuses on keeping tuition low for our students, but regardless of these efforts, tuition does continue to rise,” said Pancoast. “That’s why the foundation needs our help. Many deserving students are unable to receive the financial assistance they need to obtain a college education.”

Additionally, at the annual meeting, board member Paul Glenney, Mattoon, received the Foundation’s Crystal Swan Award. This award recognizes his outstanding contributions to the foundation.

“Paul is a true philanthropist at heart and believes in the mission of the foundation,” said Cox. “He is always available to represent the Foundation at various cultural events sponsored by the Foundation and tell our story about the many benefits of supporting Lake Land College and our students. He and his wife Kathy support the only scholarship that focuses on minorities or our international student population and he is always engaged in conversation as to how we can do better as an organization. He is a pleasure to have on our board and we definitely appreciate his service.”

The following people were recommended to serve as officers for the 2013-2014 year during the annual meeting: Bob Pancoast, Shelbyville, will serve as president; Nanci Huels of Altamont will serve as vice president; and Paul Glenney of Mattoon will be the board’s secretary.

Five outgoing board members were honored with Honorary Director status. They were Amy Borntrager, Mattoon; Randy Miller, Taylorville; Dave Storm, Effingham; and Larry Yargus, Marshall.

Board members who will continue to serve on the foundation board are: Debbie Benefiel, Paris; Chad Faller, Charleston; Dave Frisse, Paris; Jennifer Jansen, Effingham; Garth Jones, Mattoon; Linda McCabe, Shelbyville; Jeff Mefford, Effingham; John Livesay, Pana;Deanna Nuxoll, Effingham; Preston Smith, Mattoon; and Tom Wright Dieterich.

In addition new board members serving include: Chad Thompson, Effingham; Mike Bohannon, Effingham; Steve Childers, Mattoon; and Meg Yargus, Marshall.

The Foundation assists Lake Land in developing and enhancing educational opportunities and services to its students, alumni and citizens of the district. The Foundation’s primary focus has been providing assistance to students through scholarships from gifts contributed to the Foundation by individuals, agencies and corporations.
