Kappes of Arcola takes Best in Show at Lake Land College Foundation’s 37th Annual Art Heritage Show

The Lake Land College Foundation recently hosted its 37th Annual Art Heritage Show. Seventy-two artists submitted 116 works of art which are on display in the Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center on the Lake Land College campus in Mattoon until Oct. 31. 

The show featured work of many local artists and was co-sponsored by the Lake Land College Foundation and the First National Bank of Mattoon.  

“The Foundation is very grateful for the continued support of our sponsors for this show, which is now in its 37th year at Lake Land College," said Dave Cox, director of the foundation and alumni. "It gives an opportunity for a variety of artwork to be displayed by very talented artists in our area." 

The judge for this year’s contest was Ben Cohan, art instructor at Lake Land College.

Two Best in Show awards were presented. In the Student Division, Haylie Lading, Humboldt, won for her acrylic on canvass painting, “Ryan Higa.” In the Professional/Amateur Division, Jan Kappes, Arcola, won for her ink on paper entry “Back Yard Flash Back #13.” 

Show winners in the Professional Division are as follows:  first place, Nick Walk, Sigel, for his linoleum painting, “Busch Stadium;” second place, Ronald Bartanen, Sullivan, for his watercolor painting on Yupo, “Flowers at Rockhome Garden;” and third place, Dorothy Bennett, Charleston, for her sterling silver and pearls entry, “Seeds.”

In the Amateur Division, the winners are: first place, Mark Hillard, Charleston, for his acrylic on canvass painting, “Ernest;” second place, Barbara Althoff, Effingham, for her watercolor painting, “Hibiscus;” and third place was again Hillard, for his acrylic on canvass painting, “Man in the Back Seat.”

In the Student Division, the winners are: first place, Mackenzie Alwardt, Mattoon, for her acrylic painting, “Wiz Khalifa;” second place, Christine Ryan, Charleston, for her sharpie marker on canvass drawing, “Giraffe;” and third place, Lauren Jansen, Teutopolis, for her charcoal drawing “Church.” 

Honorable mentions were given to the following:  Sherry Harris, Sullivan, for her watercolor painting, “Hollyhocks,” in the Professional Division; Phillip Glosser, Charleston, for his pen and ink print, “Lincoln Log Cabin,” in the Professional Division; Barbara Brummer, Mason, for her oil painting, “Sun Burst,” in the Amateur Division; and Katelyn Esker, Teutopolis, for her charcoal and pastel entry, “All Cracked Up,” in the Student Division. 

Monetary awards of $100, $50 and $25 were given to first, second and third place winners in each of the three divisions.  The Best of Show in the Professional and Amateur Division received a $150 award and the Best of Show in the Student Division was awarded $150, as well.  

The Lake Land College Foundation is a nonprofit corporation organized and operated exclusively for educational, scientific and cultural purposes to assist in developing and fostering scholarships and charitable activities.  It assists the college in developing and enhancing the educational opportunities and services to its students, alumni and citizens of the district.  The Foundation administers general and academic scholarships, which have been made available by contributions, gifts, grants and bequests.
