Lake Land College’s Satterwhite wins Illinois Association of Career and Technical Education Teacher of the YearLake Land College’s Satterwhite wins Illinois Association of Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year. The Illinois Association of Career and Technical Education (IACTE) recently named Lake Land College business instructor Marcy Satterwhite Teacher of the Year. The IACTE Teacher of the year award recognizes teachers who are providing outstanding career and technical education programs for youth in their respective fields and communities. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs that are serving to improve and promote career and technical education. Satterwhite is a full-time business instructor and the coordinator of Desktop Publishing Programs at Lake Land College where she has taught since 1997. Prior to that, she taught full-time for three years in the business department at Charleston High School after graduating from Eastern Illinois University. Satterwhite was nominated for this award by her state teaching affiliate group, the Illinois Business Education Association (IBEA), of which she has been a member for over twenty years. She received the IBEA Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year Award in 2011 and the North Central Business Education Association’s Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year Award in 2012. Winners of the state career and technical association Teacher of the Year Award will be moved on to the regional award nominations. Satterwhite has also been nominated for the National Business Teacher of the Year Award. Satterwhite has developed and taught a wide variety of business and computer courses over the years and her position has evolved into her current position as coordinator of the Desktop Publishing programs. She was also at the forefront of developing online classes at Lake Land College and has developed and continues to teach several online classes. Current subjects she teaches at Lake Land College include: Teaching & Learning with Technology, Practical Software Applications, Introduction to Business Online, Internet Systems and Applications Online, and the Desktop Publishing Capstone class, which all of her desktop majors take their last semester in the program. “My goal in all of my classes is to teach students not only the subject matter, but the practical skills such as good attendance and organization and the ability to continue to learn on their own, so that they will have the basic skills they need to succeed in whatever their future career might be,” said Satterwhite. In addition to her teaching duties, Satterwhite is a very active member of the Diversity Education Task Force at Lake Land and the sponsor of the B-GLADD student diversity club. Satterwhite is a member of several professional organizations including the Eastern Illinois Business Education Association, where she currently serves as president; the Illinois Business Education Association, where she is a board member; the National Business Education Association; and the Illinois Association of Career and Technical Education.
