Lake Land College honors John Deere Tech graduates

 The John Deere Technology program at Lake Land College welcomed 20 new technicians to the field at its annual Graduation Recognition Banquet. Family and friends of the graduates recently gathered at the Walk Way in Mattoon to celebrate the students’ hard work and dedication.

Lake Land College instructor creates GPS game app for students visiting campus

 It’s no secret that when visiting the Lake Land College campus, it’s easy to get turned around. Most contribute this to the circular layout of the campus and the buildings that fit into that circle like pie pieces. But, for area high school students who recently visited campus to participate in the annual Business and Computer Contest, sponsored by the Business Division, they got to navigate campus with a smart phone application designed by Scott Rhine, IT instructor and coordinator of game development and network administration.

From analyzing historical speeches to extracting dyes from plant matter, members of the Lake Land College Honors Program have been conducting research this year in a variety of topics. Several Honors Program students recently presented their findings at the annual honors luncheon, where they were also recognized for their achievements.

 The Lake Land College Human Services Club recently donated $300 to two are non-for-profit organizations. The donation was made possible by fundraisers held throughout the school year including a bake sale and Celebrating Home and Scentsy products sale.

 Each spring at Lake Land College, the Faculty Association and Student Ambassadors square off to raise money for the Lake Land College Faculty Association Scholarship. This year, the annual Faculty/Student Softball Game raised $1,400 for the scholarship.

 The Lake Land College Alumni Association recently inducted the Distinguished Alumni Society (DAS) Class of 2013.  The inductees were Adam Bohnhoff (class of 2004) of Effingham; Matt Bowyer (class of 1995) of Perryville, Mo; Carol Jo Fritts (class of 1974) of Greenup; Chris Rennels (class of 1999) of Urbana; and Terrall Stewart (class of 1976) of Toledo. The Distinguished Alumni Society recognizes alumni who have utilized the Lake Land experience to make an imprint on his or her profession or community.

Lake Land College awards Adult Student of the Year

 For Autumn Fain of Casey, the path to receiving her education has not been an easy one. Even though she was a straight-A student at Newton High School, she dropped out when she was 16, after discovering she was pregnant. Seven months into her pregnancy, Fain went into labor and gave birth to a baby boy who lived for only 12 days.

Lake Land College instructor completes assistantship with Higher Learning Commission

 Lake Land College history instructor, David Seiler recently completed a research assistantship with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). As part of a nation-wide study sponsored by the HLC, Seiler and other researchers were chosen to conduct a study, focused on dual credit programs throughout the United States. The study, “Dual Credit in U.S. Higher Education: A Study of State Policy and Quality Assurance Practices,” aimed to collect data and develop evaluation models connected to dual credit programs.

Lake Land College looks to refresh campus technology with fewer financial resources, doing ‘more with less’

 Every three to five years, Lake Land College looks to implement an institution-wide technology refresh in order to ensure students, faculty, staff and community members have access to the most up-to-date technology. This cycle of the refresh is no different, except that the college has to make these changes with nearly 50 percent less funding.

 Lake Land College recently received a $50,000 grant funded by GeoAlliance. The grant will help offset the cost of the highly energy efficient geothermal heating and cooling system that was recently installed in Webb Hall on the college campus in Mattoon.
