Local junior high school students perform at LLC’s Johnston Music Festival

More than 130 students from 20 area junior high schools will participate in the Frances Watts Johnston Junior High Honors Band and Chorus Festival held at 6:30 p.m. on May 2 at Lake Land College in the Field House.
The concert is made possible through the Lake Land College Foundation and the Frances Watts Johnston Memorial Fund, which was established with contributions from the E. I. Johnston family of Shelbyville. Lake Land College Music Instructor Nancy Caldwell coordinates the festival.
This year's band director is Jessica Closson, band director at Mattoon Middle School. This year’s choir director is Keith Chase, general music and choir teacher at Taylorville Junior High and Taylorville High School. The choir accompanist is Angi Chase, music teacher at South Forks Junior High and High Schools.
Participating schools include: Crestwood Junior High School, Cumberland Middle School, Dieterich Junior High School, Effingham Junior High School, Kansas Junior High School, Lovington Grade School, Marshall Junior High School, Mattoon Middle School, Moulton Middle School, Pana Junior High School, Paris Mayo Middle School, Ramsey Grade School, South Central Middle School, St. Anthony Grade School, St. John’s Lutheran School, Stewardson-Strasburg Junior High School and Windsor Junior/Senior High School.
The choir music selections include: Festival Alleluia by Roger Emerson, Time Gone by Roger Emerson, Some Nights as recorded by Fun and arranged by Mac Huff, America the Beautiful by Samuel Ward and arranged by Rollo Dilworth, and Everybody Shout by Patsy Ford Simms.
The band music selections include: The Beatles -1964! by The Beatles and arranged by Michael Brown, Amazing Grace arranged by Paul Jennings, African Festival by Quincy Hilliard and arranged by Chuck Elledge and Bruce Pearson, Colonel Bogey March by Kenneth J. Alford and arranged by Andrew Balent, and Band-O-Ween arranged by Partick Roszell.
The festival finale, which will be performed by both band and choir will be God Bless America by Irving Berlin and arranged by John Edmondson.
The rehearsal for the festival is scheduled for April 24 from 6:30-8:15 p.m. on the Lake Land College campus.
