Lake Land College Foundation awards first CDL scholarship

The Lake Land College Foundation recently awarded Jamey Flynn of Charleston the first ever Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program scholarship in the amount of $250. The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates excellent skills, safety and passion for the truck driving industry.

The scholarship was made possible by Evelyn and Garrett Burtcheard of Sullivan, who opened a scholarship fund for students in the CDL program in honor of their son Rick “Too Tall” Burtcheard, who enjoyed a long career in trucking.  “Too Tall” passed away in June 2011 after a heart attack.

According to Dave Cox, director of the Foundation and Alumni, this is the first scholarship solely for students in the CDL program at Lake Land College, which he said is a vital service to business and industry in Illinois as well as a great job opportunity for students.
