Local junior high school students perform at LLC’s Johnston Music Festival

More than 130 students from 20 area junior high schools will participate in the Frances Watts Johnston Junior High Honors Band and Chorus Festival held at 6:30 p.m. on May 3 at Lake Land College in the Field House.

The concert is made possible through the Lake Land College Foundation and the Frances Watts Johnston Memorial Fund, which was established with contributions from the E. I. Johnston family of Shelbyville. Lake Land College Music Instructor Nancy Caldwell coordinates the festival. 

This year's band director will be Danelle Larson, assistant professor of music education and director of the music education division at Eastern Illinois University. This year’s choir director will be Patty Finks, vocal music director for Moulton Middle School and Shelbyville High School. The choir accompanist will be Susan Hiddle, retired director of vocal music for Paris High School Show Choir and retired director of Mayo Middle School’s sixth grade band.

Participating schools include: Effingham Jr. High School, Mattoon Middle School, Paris Mayo Middle School, Moulton Jr. High School, Marshall Jr. High School, Pana Jr. High School, Crestwood Jr. High School, Dieterich Jr. High School, Cumberland Jr. High School, St. Anthony Jr. High School, South Central Middle School, Okaw Valley Middle School, Stewardson-Strasburg Jr. High School, Windsor Jr. High School, Brownstown Jr. High School, Martinsville Jr. High School, Kansas Jr. High School, Ramsey Jr. High School, Lovington Jr. High School, and St. John’s Lutheran School. 

The choir music selections include: Song for the Unsung Hero by Joseph Martin, Riversong by Andy Beck, Blue Skies by Irving Berlin and arranged by Steve Zegree, Kyrie by Antonin Dvorak and arranged by Ruth Elaine Schram, and Finale B by Jonathan Larson and arranged by Roger Emerson.

The band music selections include: Korean Fold Rhapsody by James Curnow, White River Canyon Overture by John Higgins, Kentucky 1800 by Clare Grundman, Air for Band by Frank Erickson, Modal Song and Dance by Elliot Del Borgo, and A Prehistoric Suite by Paul Jennings. 

The festival finale, which will be performed by both band and choir will be God Bless America by Irving Berlin and arranged by John Edmondson.

The rehearsal for the festival is scheduled for April 25 from 6:30-8:15 p.m. on the Lake Land College campus.
