Lake Land College Pathways students place third in state-wide competition to end teen dating violence

Five high school students who attend the Paris Pathways program won third place in a video competition sponsored by the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ILCADV), Lt. Governor Sheila Simon’s office and Verizon Wireless.

As part of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in October, the No More Teen Dating Abuse Video Competition invited all high schools in the state of Illinois to submit a video, calling for an end to teen dating violence and for the promotion of healthy relationships.

The five students from Paris – Brittany Church, Kaylin McGinness, Colton Keeney, Kevin Griggs and Shelby Williamson – were recently recognized for their outstanding efforts at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center’s Pathways Health Fair.

“The entire project came down to the commitment by these students,” said Shelby Smith, Pathways instructor. “They wrote the script, shot the video and did all of the editing, which is quite a feat considering we do not have the most-up-to-date software for projects like this.”

For placing in the competition, each student won Kindles, provided by Verizon Wireless.

Lake Land College, in coordination with various local school districts offers the Pathways Program, an alternative education setting that serves a student population between the ages of 16 to 21 who have either dropped out of high school or are at-risk for dropping out.

Pathways classes meet five days a week for six hours a day throughout the Lake Land College district and are taught by certified teachers and classroom assistants who offer individualized instruction for at-risk students.
