Lake Land College instructor completes assistantship with Higher Learning Commission

Lake Land College history instructor, David Seiler recently completed a research assistantship with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). As part of a nation-wide study sponsored by the HLC, Seiler and other researchers were chosen to conduct a study, focused on dual credit programs throughout the United States. The study, “Dual Credit in U.S. Higher Education: A Study of State Policy and Quality Assurance Practices,” aimed to collect data and develop evaluation models connected to dual credit programs.

“My time as a research assistant for the HLC has been an invaluable learning experience,” explained Seiler. “From the beginning, I considered it an honor to be chosen for the project and I am proud of the final product.  I believe it will be of great assistance to researchers on the subject of dual credit across the country and can serve as a research model for those wanting to drill down into the subject and do further research on a state and local level.”

Dual credit programs permit students enrolled in high school to simultaneously earn college credit. Many school districts throughout the Lake Land College district offer dual credit classes so students can get a jump start on their college education.

Seiler’s interest in dual credit programs stems from his years teaching at Effingham High School, where he said teaching high school helped him to understand how dual credit programs work, later in his career.

For the study, Seiler, who is a doctoral student at Indiana State University, worked on a team comprised of three researchers, led by Professor Vic Borden of Indiana State University. The team has worked on the project for the last year.

The Higher Learning Commission is one of six regional institutional accreditors of degree-granting, post-secondary educational institutions. The commission sponsors independent research projects in order to contribute to the knowledge base of various aspects in higher education.
