Lake Land College announces instructions for closings and cancellations
With winter weather right around the corner, Lake Land College has taken steps to ensure that students, staff and faculty are aware of college closings and class and event cancellations.
There are several ways to receive the most up-to-date information on closings and cancellations. Every effort will be made to keep the college open, and in many cases, Lake Land College will remain open when elementary and secondary schools are closed.
In the event of inclement weather, mechanical or power failure, or other emergencies, the following procedures will be implemented. Closings will be communicated to the college community via area media outlets, text alerts, emails and announcements on the home page, social media and the Lake Land College student Hub. Since these methods are dependent on the cooperation of third parties and technology, the college encourages people to check multiple sources if it is anticipated that the college will be closed.
If the college is closed, the closing applies to all off-campus locations including the Kluthe Center for Higher Education and Technology in Effingham, extension centers in Marshall and Pana and other locations hosting LLC classes. If there is a need to specifically close only one location, that will be communicated. Classes held at area high schools will follow the individual high school’s procedures for closing.
The decision to close classes that begin at 4 p.m. or later will be made by early afternoon, when possible. When weather conditions prevent the opening of the college or cause a delayed opening of the college, every effort will be made to make announcements on the following radio stations and TV stations by 6 a.m. for that day: WLKL - Mattoon, 89.9; WEIU – Charleston, 88.9 FM; WKJ – Effingham, 102.3 FM; WCRA – Effingham, 1090 AM; WPMB – Vandalia, 1500 AM/ 107 FM; WCRC Effingham, 1090AM/95.7 FM; WPRS/WIBQ – Paris, 1400 AM/98.5 FM; WXEF – Effingham, 97.9 FM; WLRW – Champaign, 94.5 FM; WMCI – Mattoon, 101.3 FM; WEJT – Decatur, 105.1 FM; WIKK – Newton, 103.5 FM; WZNX – Decatur, 106.7 FM; WHQQ – Mattoon, 98.9 FM; WWGO – Mattoon, 92.1 FM; WRAN – Shelbyville, 98.3 FM; WRJM – Charleston, 1270 AM/107.5 FM; WCBH – Effingham, 104.3 FM; WEIU-TV – Charleston (Channel 6); WAND-TV - Decatur (Channel 17) ABC; WICD-TV - Champaign (Channel 15) NBC; WTWO-TV - Terre Haute (Channel 2) NBC; WCIA TV - Champaign (Channel 3) CBS; and WTHI TV - Terre Haute (Channel 10) CBS.
For students, staff and faculty to receive text alerts and email messages, they must log on to the Hub, click on IRIS and select 'Opt-In/Opt-Out' under the profile tab. Here, students, staff and faculty can personalize what alerts they wish to receive.
“Our student, staff and faculty’s safety is important to us,” said Scott Lensink, president of Lake Land College. “This is why we give the opportunity to ‘opt–in’ for text messages in the event of an emergency or weather closing. Text messaging also allows students to receive messages when their classes are cancelled.”
